The Society of American Archivists’ Annual Meeting will take place in Cleveland, Ohio this year from August 16-22. If this will be your first annual meeting, check out the Official First-Timer’s Guide to the 2015 Annual Meeting. Produced by SNAP Members, this guide has tons of advice to help you prepare, pack, network, and choose sessions. You can also browse the Program Committee’s general resources for New Members, First-Timers, and Students or see what SNAP members had to say in the 2014 Annual Meeting Advice Series.
Here are a few tips to help you prepare for SAA 2015.
Students and archives professionals earning less than $50,000 a year will save money on registration by joining SAA.
Student registration costs $139 regardless of when you register. Non-students can save $110 if you register for the conference before July 15. If you register before July 18, you can save $60 with the Advance rate. It is also possible to register for just one day of the conference.
Apply for the Spontaneous Scholarship program
Until midnight on Tuesday, June 30, you can throw your name in the hat for Kate Theimer’s Award-Winning Spontaneous Scholarship program. If your name is drawn, you will be reimbursed for your conference registration fees. You can also help others by donating to the fund. If you haven’t contributed yet, an anonymous donor has offered to match dollar for dollar all contributions made in this final week.
Sign up to share a room or a ride
SNAP hosts a spreadsheet where you can find rides, request roommates, or offer up a couch for the conference.
MEET NEW PEOPLE
Attend the SNAP Roundtable Meeting
Our annual roundtable meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 19 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Stay tuned for details about the meeting program! Beyond SNAP, there’s much more to see throughout the week! Conference registrants may attend any SAA section or roundtable meeting (although only section and roundtable members are eligible to vote). SAA members are also invited to attend Council, board, committee, working group, and task force meetings. Plan your week with the conference schedule site.
Sign up for the Navigator Program
Sponsored by the Women Archivists Roundtable and Membership Committee, this program matches first-time conference attendees with a conference veteran. The Navigator Program serves as a short-term mentoring program for conference attendees. Navigators are available to answer questions, guide attendees through the annual meeting, or meet in person for advice and encouragement. If you are a new member or first-time meeting attendee, consider requesting a Navigator for the Cleveland Meeting. If you’ve attended one or more annual meetings, consider serving as a Navigator – it’s a great experience! The deadline to request a Navigator is July 3.
Join a Service Project
Service projects at the Annual Meeting allow SAA Members to give back to the community. 2015 service projects will be hosted on Tuesday and Wednesday (before the plenary). Visit the Host Committee’s blog for more information about volunteering opportunities – current partnerships include Shoes and Clothes for Kids (SC4K) and the Cleveland Animal Protective League (CAPL). Participation may be limited, so consider signing up early.
Participate in the Lunch Buddy Program
SNAP hosts a public spreadsheet to help SAA members find people to share meals with throughout the conference. This is a great opportunity to network with mentors and colleagues while exploring Cleveland’s rich food scene.
Visit the Networking Café
The Networking Café, open Wednesday through Saturday, features the SAA Career Center, Mentoring Program Meet-and-Greet, and booths for various education programs.
FOLLOW THE CONFERENCE VIRTUALLY
If you’re unable to attend SAA 2015 in person, you can participate via #saa15 on Twitter and catch up on sessions through the SNAP Roundtable blog. We’ll have lots of great content for you in the weeks leading up to the meeting, so stay tuned!
